Computer Group Survey of
Computer Software and Hardware Use August 16 -17, 2016
To get an assessment of the digital equipment our members were using, we attached a simple, one page questionnaire to the annual Newsletter that we sent out during the third week of August 2016.  By September 6 we received 80 completed forms from the 216 members to whom the Newsletter was distributed.  The results are described and tabulated below.
Summary:

Tablets, including the iPad, are the most common digital device in use, but they seldom are the only device available.  Laptops and notebooks are the next most common, but sometimes several of them are owned by the same person.  So slightly more individuals reported owning one or more desktops than reported owning one or more laptops or notebooks.  In the future portable devices will most likely quite exceed desktops and we should consider this in managing our program.
Hardware:

Of the 80 respondents, 4 had no desktops, laptops, notebooks, tablets, or smart phones.  Two of those reported using the Lab computers.

In the replies, 40 members reported owning a total of 44 desktops; 38 reported owning 46 laptops or notebooks, 44 reported owning 52 tablets and 23 reported using 26 smart phones.  Of the 52 tablets, 36 were iPads.  Most of the other tablets used various operating systems (OSs), including Android, Windows 8 or 8.1 and Windows 10.

A desktop is the only digital device for 16 of the 40 desktops owners.  Among the 38 who own laptops or notebooks, 6 own no other kind of device.  Among the 44 that own tablets, 9 own no other device.  This includes the 36 iPad users, 9 of whom use no other device.  Smart phones are used by 23 individuals who reported a total of 26 such phones.
Operating Systems:

The most common OS employed by the 80 respondents is Windows 7 with 45 users.  Of them, for 39 it is the only system used.  Windows 10 is used by 21, and for 13 it is the only system. Windows 8 or 8.1 is used by 6 and it is the only system for 3.  Windows XP was reported by 4, Vista by 2 and Ubuntu Linux by one.
